The short answer
You wake in a hotel whose rooms refuse to stay put, tear seams in the walls to open new passages, and gather lost dream fragments while something called The Unmade uses those same openings to hunt you. It runs instantly in a browser with no download or account, and it costs nothing to start.
What is MOURNSEAM?
You wake inside a hotel that will not hold still. Corridors lead where they should not, mirrors misdirect, and the walls have been stitched shut with something moving on the far side. MOURNSEAM is a first-person survival-horror maze built on that one image: reality as a fabric you can cut open.
Progress comes from tearing seams apart. Each rip reveals a room or a passage that was not there before, so the map you travel is one you made yourself. The catch is that every opening works in both directions, and The Unmade, the creature sharing the hotel with you, uses the gaps you leave behind to hunt.
Deeper in, the hotel offers birthday rooms that feel wrong, deceptive mirrors, and dark underground spaces to cross. Lost dream fragments are scattered through these places, and getting out depends on collecting and navigating rather than simply sprinting. The game plays instantly in a browser with no download and no account, and it is free.
How to play
A run asks you to do three things at once: open the hotel, read it, and close it behind you. Tearing a seam is how new rooms are discovered, so exploration and risk are the same action. Stitching is the counter-move, and thread is limited, so every seal is a judgement about which passage matters and which one you can afford to leave open.
Fragments are the collectible layer, and the maze is the structure wrapped around them. Between the two, the game keeps returning to one question: push on for another room, or spend thread shutting a route you no longer trust.
Dream Journey is the long-form mode, moving through increasingly unsettling floors with checkpoints that persist. Nightmare Run strips the safety away: a single life, mounting danger, and personal bests to chase. Daily Seam is a daily nightmare challenge with one measure of success, which is how far into the dream you can get.
Controls
Desktop play sits on a very small set of inputs. The arrow keys handle turning and moving, so navigation stays on one cluster of keys. Holding Space covers the interaction layer on either side of the loop, tearing a seam open or stitching one shut.
On mobile and tablet the same actions move to on-screen controls: hold to tear or stitch, and tap an open passage to enter it. Nothing else is needed beyond loading the page.
Because opening and sealing share one held input, the weight of the game sits in that press. Tearing commits you to a route that The Unmade can also use, and stitching asks for the same deliberate hold while something is closing in. Building that rhythm in Dream Journey, where checkpoints protect the attempt, is gentler than learning it in a one-life Nightmare Run.
| Input | Action |
|---|---|
| Arrow keys | Turn and move |
| Space (hold) | Tear seams open or stitch them shut |
| On-screen controls (mobile and tablet) | Move, and hold to tear or stitch seams |
| Tap an open passage (mobile and tablet) | Enter the passage |
Tips for your first run
Dream Journey is the right place to start. Persistent checkpoints mean a poor decision costs a stretch of floor rather than the entire attempt, and the floors grow more unsettling as you go, so the difficulty curve is built into the structure.
None of that makes Nightmare Run gentle, since one life is one life, but it does make the first stretch of the hotel readable.
- Tear with intent. Every seam opened is a road for The Unmade as well.
- Treat thread as a budget. Sealing a corridor behind you is often worth more than the next room.
- Stop at a new opening and listen for what follows before stepping through.
- Collect dream fragments as you travel instead of saving them for a later sweep; they are what the run is built around.
- If sudden scares are the part you would rather skip, switch on the reduced-startle setting. Reduced motion is available for the same reason.
Content and replayability
The hotel's room types carry the variety: corridors that refuse to stay put, birthday rooms that turn celebration imagery sour, mirrors that misdirect, and dark underground stretches. Floors are meant to become more unsettling as you progress, so escalation is part of the structure rather than a toggle.
Three modes give the same hotel three shapes. Dream Journey is the checkpointed clear. Nightmare Run reframes it as a one-life test with personal bests attached. Daily Seam hands over a fresh challenge each day and asks how deep into the dream you can get. The same rooms are asked to be a learning space, a trial, and a daily ritual.
The content warning is specific: it covers psychological horror and unsettling imagery, along with sudden scares and threatening encounters with a creature. Reduced-startle and reduced-motion settings are available for players drawn to the dreamcore look but wary of jump scares, so the atmosphere can be dialled to a level that suits.
Presentation and performance
In-game visuals and audio are procedurally rendered, and the promotional artwork was generated separately. Development was AI-assisted, with design and testing human-directed. On screen that becomes a hotel of stitched walls, impossible architecture, and mirrors that disagree with the room around them.
Because the game is an HTML5 build, there is no install step and no account gate; it starts from a click in the browser. That makes it easy to sample the first floor of Dream Journey, or to take one Daily Seam attempt, without committing an evening to it.
The Unmade supplies the pressure, hunting through the passages you have opened. Listening for what follows is part of reading a room before you step into it, and sudden scares are part of the package alongside the slower wrongness. The reduced-startle setting exists for players who want the dreamcore unease without the jolts.
Who should play it
This is horror for players who want atmosphere and navigation more than action. The verbs on offer are tear, stitch, collect and escape, and the tension comes from a hotel that answers back every time you open it. Anyone who enjoys building a mental map of a hostile building, then watching that map become a liability, is the target audience.
Score chasers get Nightmare Run's single-life runs and personal bests, plus Daily Seam for a repeatable daily attempt. Players who scare easily should take the content warning at its word and know that reduced-startle and reduced-motion options are there.
Browser-only players are well served by the whole package: free to start, arrow keys and Space on desktop, on-screen controls on phone or tablet, and a hotel that opens the moment the page does.
