The short answer
Penguin Nursery is a free browser simulation in which you look after ten hand-made penguin chicks on a 3D snow-globe island at candy-coloured dusk. Each bird has five needs, four care stations and its own accessory. Skuas raid, hearts drop, and the difficulty ramps day by day. Play it now for a gentle management loop that fits a coffee break.
What is Penguin Nursery?
Penguin Nursery is a simulation game that runs in a browser and costs nothing to play. The setting is a hand-built 3D snow-globe island held in permanent candy-coloured dusk, where a small flock of penguin chicks lives under your care. There are ten of them, and no two are alike: each has a name, a personality, a set of expressions and a small accessory such as a bow, a beanie, a scarf or a sprout.
The job is simple to describe and considerably busier to do. Chicks waddle about, giggle, bat at toys and constantly want something: food, warmth, a wash, a bit of play or a nap. Neglect has a price, because every chick left wanting costs one of three hearts, and when the last heart goes the day ends. Skuas patrol as well, and a snatched bird hurts more than a hungry one.
The characters, art, music and sound are all originals made by Roderick Arthurian, with the whole thing built in three.js and delivered as a single offline file.
How to play
Every chick carries five needs: hunger, warmth, cleanliness, fun and energy. A bubble appears above any bird that wants attention, so the first skill to learn is scanning the island for those markers instead of chasing whichever chick happens to be nearest.
Fulfilling a need usually means moving the chick to the matching station. The Cozy Hearth handles warmth, the Bubble Bath handles cleanliness, the Ice Slide handles fun, and the Snuggle Nest, a teacup, handles naps. Hunger works differently: fish come from the Ice Hole and the catch is then delivered to whoever is peckish. Sick chicks are a separate case and need medicine taken from the Medicine cabinet.
Skuas are the disruption. Tapping one scares it off, and doing that before it reaches a chick matters more than tidying up a missed meal. Each neglected chick removes a heart, three lost hearts end the day, and the number of days survived is the figure worth watching. From there the nursery tightens steadily.
Controls
Penguin Nursery accepts two input schemes and switches between them without ceremony. With a mouse or a touchscreen, tapping the ground sends the caretaker walking, tapping a chick lifts it and a second tap sets it down, and tapping a station puts it to work. Fishing adds a timing step: the Reel! prompt only counts while the marker sits inside the green zone.
Keyboard players get the same options on WASD or the arrow keys for movement, with Space or E covering pickup, drop-off, station use and reeling. P or Esc pauses. The title screen carries one extra binding worth knowing, since Enter begins Hard mode, the standard version of the nursery.
On a phone the layout is portrait friendly and driven entirely by touch, which makes the whole loop playable one-handed. Fishing is still a matter of tapping Reel! at the right moment rather than tapping quickly and hoping.
| Input | Action |
|---|---|
| Mouse / touch on the ground | Walk |
| Mouse / touch on a chick | Pick it up; tap again to put it down |
| Mouse / touch on a station | Use that station |
| Reel! button at the Ice Hole | Reel in a fish when the marker is in the green zone |
| WASD / arrow keys | Walk |
| Space or E | Pick up, drop, use or reel |
| P or Esc | Pause |
| Enter on the title screen | Start Hard mode |
Tips for your first run
New caretakers tend to chase whichever chick is squeaking loudest. A better opening habit is to treat the island as a queue with priorities, because the expensive mistakes are the ones that cost a heart rather than the ones that leave a chick waiting an extra beat.
- Hold a fish or two in reserve; hunger piles up faster than any other need.
- Batch the chores, since the bath and the snuggle nest each hold more than one chick at a time.
- Read red, wobbling bubbles as alarms and clear them before anything else.
- Deal with skuas before topping up a need, because a stolen chick stings more than a hungry one.
- On an older phone, switch on the tilt-shift button (◎) to steady performance.
Content and replayability
Ten chicks make up the cast, each with a distinct look, its own expressions and an accessory such as a bow, a beanie, a scarf or a sprout. That detail does real work: a bird is identifiable across the island at a glance, which matters once several bubbles are competing for attention.
The stations are animated rather than static. Bubbles churn in the bath, steam rises from the pot and stars appear on the slide, so the room reads as busy even when nothing is urgent.
Longevity comes from the day-by-day difficulty ramp rather than from scripted content. The measure of a run is how many days the nursery survives, and local high scores give that number something to beat. Because the game arrives as a single offline file with no downloads or logins, starting a fresh attempt costs only a page load.
Presentation and performance
The island is a hand-made 3D snow globe seen at candy-coloured dusk, with soft lighting, glow, tilt-shift depth and snow that never stops falling. It is built with three.js and runs directly in a browser frame, so nothing sits between the title screen and the first chick. The tilt-shift button (◎) doubles as a performance switch and helps on older phones.
Sound is an original music-box score with effects to match, and a mute button sits ready for quiet rooms. Portrait orientation is supported, so a phone held upright works without rotating.
Because everything ships as one offline HTML5 file, the game opens without a download queue or an account. That is the whole technical footprint: a single file, opened in a browser, holding a small snowy island.
Who should play it
Penguin Nursery suits players who like management games with a gentle surface and a little pressure underneath. The five-need system is legible within a minute, the stations are obvious, and the early days are forgiving enough to learn in. Anyone who plays virtual pet games for the small character work, meaning the named chicks, the accessories, the idle giggling and the toy-batting, will find plenty to enjoy.
It is family friendly and single-player, and it asks for nothing beyond a browser. Players who want a run with teeth can move to Brutal, where needs fall faster, skuas arrive in larger numbers and fishing gets tighter.
It is a poor fit for anyone hunting combat, story campaigns or competition against other people. The appeal here is custodial: a small, warm, faintly chaotic routine that grows harder the longer it lasts.

Frequently asked questions
Is Penguin Nursery free?
Yes. It costs nothing to play, and there is no payment step standing between a player and the nursery.
Where can it be played?
In a browser, on desktop and on phones. Touch controls and a portrait-friendly layout are built in, and the whole game is one offline HTML5 file.
How many chicks are in the nursery?
Ten, each with its own name, personality, expressions and a small accessory such as a bow, beanie, scarf or sprout.
What happens when a chick is neglected?
Each neglected chick costs one of three hearts. Lose all three and the day ends.
How do Hard and Brutal differ?
Hard is the standard nursery, where every chick must stay fed, warm, clean, happy and rested. Brutal drops those needs faster, sends more skuas and makes fishing tighter. Pressing Enter on the title screen starts Hard mode.
Does it need an install or an account?
No. It arrives as a single offline file and opens straight in a browser tab.
