The short answer

Bark Valley is a released, free HTML5 herding game for browser play on phone, tablet, or computer. You guide a collie up to loose livestock, lead the follow-the-dog string into the barn, sell wool and milk in town, and buy back Grandpa's valley. Five chapters cover 45 days, with Rally, rare sheep, keepsakes, and a daily seeded field.

What is Bark Valley?

Bark Valley is a simulation game from left-over games about reclaiming a family farm through herding. Grandpa once worked the whole valley, but after his death it was sold in pieces; the player starts with the home paddock and a single collie. The daily loop is to find loose livestock, including sheep, pigs, cows, chickens, and horses, walk the dog up to them so they follow, and lead the wobbling line into the barn before sundown. Filling the barn lets the player sell wool and milk in town and put the money toward the next field. The structure runs five chapters and 45 days, from Green Valley to Winterhold by way of Mudwater Bend, Stonecrest, and Thornwood. Each chapter has its own ground, such as bog, stone walls, deep wood, or snow, and every fifth day is a set-piece day. Progress includes a six-breed dog pack, a Wool Ledger of 15 odd sheep, 15 of Grandpa's Keepsakes, and a 14-piece Dog Wardrobe. The tone is cosy and casual, with a clear goal and a daily run.

How to play

Each day begins with a field to clear before sundown. Walk the collie close to an animal and it falls in behind; the lead dog can hold five animals, and each extra dog adds three more to the string. The aim is not to push livestock but to collect them and keep the chain intact on the way to the barn. Rally is the one-button rescue: it wins over every animal nearby at once, and timing it well creates a longer chain and bigger combo shouts. The barn must be filled before the day ends; wool and milk then go to town, and the proceeds buy the next field back. A day's results include three ribbons, a verdict stamp ranging from ROUGH DAY to PERFECT ROUND-UP!, an itemised receipt, and a next unlock bar. Space or R replays the day instantly after a run. The Daily Valley gives everyone the same seeded field each day and tracks a streak, while a 7-day calendar and three daily missions add short-term targets.

Controls

Movement uses either a drag on the left half of the screen with touch or mouse, or the arrow keys and WASD. Steering the dog into a loose animal starts the follow behaviour, and the same movement carries the line toward the barn. Rally is bound to the round button on screen or the Space bar; it affects every animal nearby at once, so it is worth saving for a crowded moment. After a day finishes, Space or R replays it immediately. The top bar holds pause on II and sound on the musical-note button. The scheme is built for both mouse and touch, which fits the browser versions on phone, tablet, and computer. A clean run depends on using movement to gather animals and using Rally to rescue a chain that is about to break.

Tips for your first run

First runs are about learning the chain, not chasing a perfect stamp. The collie can lead five animals, so collect a manageable group and keep the line from scattering before the barn. Extra dogs raise the cap by three each, but the early focus is on clean collection and a safe route. Rally is strongest when several animals are close; holding it for a crowded pocket can turn a messy field into a long chain and a loud combo.

  • Fill the barn before sundown. Wool and milk sold in town fund the next field, so a completed day matters more than a risky extra loop.
  • Watch the three ribbons and verdict stamp. The receipt shows what counted, and the next unlock bar shows what is close.
  • Use Space or R after a rough day. Instant retry makes experimentation cheap.
  • Check the Daily Valley for the shared seeded field, the streak, the 7-day calendar, and three daily missions.
  • Keep an eye out for the Wool Ledger's 15 odd sheep and Grandpa's 15 Keepsakes while herding.
  • Dog Biscuits arrive every day, good or bad; spend them on the 14-piece wardrobe for the lead dog.

Content and replayability

Bark Valley's content is organised around a five-chapter, 45-day campaign, so there is a defined end point and a steady unlock path. The chapters change the ground under the herd, moving from Green Valley to Winterhold by way of Mudwater Bend, Stonecrest, and Thornwood; the terrain brings bog, stone walls, deep wood, and snow. Every fifth day is a set-piece, which breaks up the routine of ordinary herding days. Herding days also involve chasing off crows, rustlers, and a wolf hidden among the flock. The long-term collection layer includes six dog breeds, a Wool Ledger with 15 unusual sheep, 15 of Grandpa's Keepsakes, and 14 wardrobe pieces bought with Dog Biscuits. The Wool Ledger includes finds such as the Black Sheep, Loaf, Disco Sheep, and Alpaca, while each Keepsake carries a line of Grandpa's story. The wardrobe ranges from a bandana and straw hat to a cowboy hat, crown, and Grandpa's scarf. Daily play adds the Daily Valley's shared seed, a streak, a 7-day calendar, and three missions.

The farm saves on the device, and the Journal supplies a save code for moving progress to another browser. This version is singleplayer and does not require an account.

Presentation and performance

Bark Valley presents a 2D farmyard with animals, fields, and a lead dog that can wear wardrobe pieces. The artwork and audio are generated by the game's code. The game was programmed with AI coding tools (Claude) and designed and directed by Stephanie Nguyen. Its tone is cosy and cute, with a clear focus on farmland, herding, and collecting. The game runs in an HTML5 browser frame and supports browser play on phone, tablet, or computer, with touch controls available. The top bar provides pause and sound controls during play, and the after-day screen reports ribbons, a verdict stamp, an itemised receipt, and a next unlock bar. Daily runs end with a scorecard, instant retry with Space or R, and a save that stays on the device keep the loop easy to restart. The 45-day structure and Daily Valley seeded field are the main ways the game extends play beyond a single session.

Who should play it

Bark Valley suits players who want a cosy simulation with a clear daily task and a visible restoration goal. The appeal is in the herd, with sheep, pigs, cows, chickens, and horses following the collie, and the challenge is keeping the string together before sundown. Dog lovers get a six-breed pack, a lead dog that wears wardrobe pieces, and a collection of 15 odd sheep in the Wool Ledger. Players who like a reason to return each day can use the Daily Valley's shared seed, streak, 7-day calendar, and three missions. The five-chapter, 45-day campaign gives completionists a defined path from Green Valley to Winterhold by way of Mudwater Bend, Stonecrest, and Thornwood, with 15 Keepsakes and 14 wardrobe items to find or buy. It is singleplayer, browser-based, and free to play, with touch and keyboard controls. The pace is casual, and each day ends with a verdict stamp and a receipt. Anyone who enjoys short, repeatable runs with instant retry will find the structure familiar.
