The short answer
A Wholesome Aquarium Game is a cozy pixel-art simulation about running a fish shop and building a collection. Breed freshwater fish through inherited colour, pattern, shiny and stat genes, log discoveries in the Fishdex, sell stock through a passive market stall, fish from the dock and take Lab-boosted fighters into turn-based back room bouts. It is free and playable in the browser now.
What is A Wholesome Aquarium Game?
A Wholesome Aquarium Game is a cozy pixel-art fish-keeping simulation from Beef Ink. It is in active development, runs in a browser window, also offers a Windows download, and bundles several hobbies into one small shop: breeding, collecting, retail, angling and turn-based battling.
Breeding is the spine of the whole thing. Every fish carries genes that shape its colours, its pattern, whether it turns up shiny and five separate stats. Pair two favourites and the next generation draws from both parents, so a line can be pushed in a chosen direction over several hatchings.
The Fishdex logs every variety found and supplies a long-term goal beyond a full tank. Around it sit a store, a dock and a back room, each feeding the others with fish, eggs or earnings, so a quiet tank session still moves several projects forward at once.
How to play
The title screen opens with any key, a tap or a click, and from there the tank, the shop, the menus and the battles all run on taps or left-clicks. Nothing requires a keyboard once you are past the title, which keeps the whole thing comfortable on a trackpad or a touchscreen.
The breeding loop is where most time goes. Fish produce eggs, and eggs become the next generation carrying inherited colour, pattern, shiny and stat genes, with new finds dropping straight into the Fishdex. Meanwhile the market stall sells stock on its own to shoppers who stop by, so the shop keeps ticking over while you are away at the dock.
Fishing is a small timing game. Hold to build up a cast, release to send the line out, then work the lure and keep an eye on tension while the fish fights back. Land it and the catch joins the collection.
In the back room, Battle-Ready fish take on four challengers in turn-based fights for ribbons, badges and a trophy. Only fish upgraded in the Lab can compete: the machine trades spare fish or eggs for boosted stats, armour and a gear slot, and the resulting champion lives in a tube. That promotion costs the fish its breeding career.
Controls
Input is deliberately thin. Menus, the tank, the store and battles all respond to a tap or a left-click, so there is no command list to memorise before the first fish arrives. The title screen accepts any key, a tap or a click, and that is the only place a keyboard has any use.
Fishing is the one activity with its own verbs: hold on the cast to charge it, release to fire the line out, then work the lure and watch the tension meter as you bring the catch in. Let the tension get away from you and the fish is gone.
The whole game is built touch-first and plays fully with a mouse, so a laptop with nothing but a trackpad is fine. On mobile devices a pinch gesture zooms the view when the tank or the shop feels cramped.
| Input | Action |
|---|---|
| Tap or left-click | Everything: menus, tank, store and battles |
| Any key, tap or click | Start from the title screen |
| Hold, then release | Charge the cast and send the fishing line out |
| Lure input and line tension | Reel in a fish during the fishing mini-game |
| Pinch | Zoom on mobile |
Tips for your first run
Treat the opening tank as a genetics lab rather than a shopfront. Keep pairs whose colours and patterns you like, hatch through a few generations and let the Fishdex fill as a side effect of chasing a look you actually want.
The market stall is passive income, so stock it and forget it while you fish. Use the Lab sparingly in the early hours: the stat, armour and gear boost is real, but the fish you upgrade leaves the breeding pool permanently.
Steady hands beat fast reactions at the dock, and a full Fishdex entry is worth more than a quick sale. Bullets below cover the habits that matter most in the first few sessions.
- Watch line tension more closely than the lure animation.
- Hatch spare eggs before spending fish in the Lab.
- Keep two breeding pairs rather than one, so a line never stalls.
- Restock the stall before heading to the dock for a long session.
- Save Lab upgrades for fish whose genes you no longer need.
Content and replayability
The collection layer has an unusually long tail. Colour, pattern, shiny status and five separate stats all inherit, so a single species can be pushed in many directions and every hatching is a small reveal. Completing the Fishdex is a genuine project rather than a checklist.
Battling adds a second track. Four challengers stand between a fresh Lab fighter and the trophy, and because conversion is permanent, deciding which fish becomes a competitor is a real sacrifice rather than a free upgrade.
Between the passive stall, the fishing dock and the shop itself, there is always something ticking over during a short break. The game is still in active development, with more art and polish planned for the dock, market and breeding screens, and feedback is invited from players while that work continues.
Content and replayability note
The presentation leans hard on hand-made pixel art shown at crisp whole-number scaling, so sprites stay sharp instead of blurring between pixels. The aquarium, the shop floor and the back room each get their own visual treatment within that style.
Players get an avatar to represent themselves in the aquarium, which gives the shop a face beyond the fish. The project is built in Godot Engine and designed around touch from the start, with full mouse parity for desktop play.
Saves are stored locally, in the browser for the web build or on the PC for the download, so clearing browser data clears the browser save. Anyone planning a long collection run on the web version should bear that in mind before wiping site data.
Who should play it
This suits players who like slow-burn collection goals more than reflex tests. Anyone who has ever bred creatures for a specific colour, or kept a spreadsheet of bloodlines, will recognise the appeal immediately.
It also fits players who want several small systems rather than one deep one: a stall to restock, a dock to fish from, a Lab to tinker with and a handful of turn-based fights to break up the routine. Sessions can be short, because the market keeps earning without supervision.
The tone is wholesome and relaxed throughout, so it is a reasonable pick for a younger player or for someone winding down. Players chasing action, live competition or a finished, bug-free release should note that the game is still in development and expect changes.

Frequently asked questions
Is A Wholesome Aquarium Game free?
It costs nothing at the moment, and no price is stated for the finished version.
Where can it be played?
In a browser through an HTML5 build, and as a Windows download. The browser version is playable immediately.
Do you need a keyboard?
Only to leave the title screen. Everything else runs on taps or left-clicks, and fishing uses a hold-and-release cast plus lure and tension work.
Is there touch support?
Touch input is the primary design. Taps drive menus, the tank, the store and battles, and a pinch gesture zooms the view on mobile.
How is progress saved?
Locally, either in the browser or on the PC for the download. Clearing browser data wipes the browser save.
Can a Lab fighter still breed?
No. A fish sent through the Lab becomes Battle-Ready with boosted stats, armour and a gear slot, and it loses breeding permanently.
